Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips.
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
~John 19:28-30
To hear someone say "It is finished" many a times would mean that something has ended terribly wrong or a failure has resulted in no further way on. However, the very same three words were said by Jesus Christ, the crucified "King of The Jews". For this man, who claimed to be God and asserted Himself to be God through many convincing and corroborating evidences, the meaning of that sentence is profound and simple at the same time.
The simple meaning is that His mission on earth is completed in His death on the Cross.
The profound meaning is that His death on the cross is the one and only pivotal event of all time throughout History and all future that paid the penalty of sin which was due to all mankind and released us from being responsible to redeem ourselves of sin once and for all.
Now that for me, I may say that together with Him, as a Christian, "It is Finished". He did it all! Not me, not us, not anyone of us! For we may not, we cannot, we are totally unable to do so! He did it! For you and me! Have you accepted His offer? ...
Lord Jesus, who finished your earthly mission on the Cross, open my eyes to your saving presence in the world so that I may see you in suffering and trust that death is but the gate to eternal life, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
